In Conversation With: Helen Edgeworth, Social Content Creator
Joining us as our Video & Social Content Creator, Helen brings a wealth of experience from some of the UK's biggest publishing brands, along with a passion for creating content that's creative, authentic and made to catch attention. We caught up with Helen to chat about making the move from publishing to agency life, how she first got into social content along with the trends she’s loving right now.
How do you feel about starting at Dream Big Digital?
I’m excited for the challenge. Coming from an in-house background where I worked across multiple brands, making the switch to agency work has been a great new experience. In general, I’m just really excited and happy to be here and it’s been so lovely meeting everyone and being part of a team, and I really feel like I’m working towards something here.
What role are you coming from?
I was previously a Video Editor and before that, the Social Video Editor at Hearst UK, where I worked with brands such as Cosmopolitan, ELLE, Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar and Good Housekeeping, along with a bunch of other brands.
Some days I might have some socks in a freezer, other days I might be filming myself at a public park running around with people asking “what is she doing?”
As you previously worked in the Digital Media sector in the magazine industry, how are you feeling about the transition to an agency?
It’s been a bit of a change! With publishing, you work with reference to when a magazine is coming out, and use materials to support that. Without the structure of a magazine, it has been different. It’s interesting sitting outside the brands, but also being quite involved with them - I’m really enjoying the change in dynamics.
How did you get into video & social work?
I’ve been doing video and video editing for close to 10 years now. I started in college, then I moved into doing Film at university. Around the time I left university in 2021, TikTok was starting to take over, and I transitioned into social content creation. In my old role, I worked on developing brands and trying to break them into this new platform.
Any funny client stories?
I had someone I worked with for one of the magazines who was very sensitive about how his hands looked, I think it reached version ten of a video until I eventually just had to crop all of his hands out of the video.
What do you enjoy the most about social content creation?
For me, it’s a way to fully flex my creative self. I think it’s a visual format you can be a bit silly with and less serious. Some days I might have some socks in a freezer, other days I might be filming myself at a public park running around with people asking “what is she doing?” Yeah it’s the freedom and creativity to bring ideas to life that I love.
I kind of try to focus more on what I like, and what I find entertaining. I feel like if I find it entertaining then other people will do as well.
How do you usually first approach a project?
It kind of depends on what I’m doing first, whether I’m editing or doing a full content creation plan. I think with the latter, people think you can just create this on a whim, but there’s actually a lot more structure that goes into it than that. You need to have a shoot list, similar to how you would in film. You need to think about where you’re going and how you’re going to film the content. For me, I usually make the script and then think about how I want to shoot it.
Are there any current social trends you’re loving at the moment?
I think this one may be teetering out now a little bit, but I love the one where people are sitting in public and do a weird move and then a drink appears in their hands. I just think they’re really clever and quite fun to look at. I think the weirder the move, the funnier the video.
Top tip for social content creation?
I’d say just bring your authentic self into it. I try to focus more on what I like, and what I find entertaining. I feel like if I find it entertaining then other people will do as well. I don’t think there’s any point in making a piece of boring content. I think if you throw more of yourself into it, it lands naturally.
What is your favourite thing about Leeds?
Well I left London for Leeds so I think that shows how much I love the city. I think Leeds is very up and coming, it’s a very exciting place to be at the moment, I feel like it’s really finding its feet. I also love the selection of Vietnamese restaurants here.
